The Lady Spartans faced another tough in-state rival in Lamar Community College on Saturday. As the ladies did in their first game they jumped out to an early ten point lead and it appeared that the Lady Spartans would get their first victory of season with little resistance from Lamar. However, with several unforced turnovers and missed defensive assignments by the Lady Spartans, the Running Lopes finished the half with a sizable ten point lead 38-28. The second half started out much like the first half, whereas the Lady Spartans quickly regained a 43-42 lead within the first five minutes of the second half. The game was close the entire second with neither able to put the other one team away. The Lady Spartans led by as many as seven points late in game. The momentum quickly shifted when the Lady Spartan’s floor general Danielle Jackson (SO. PG) fouled out with 5:02 left in the game. The game got even tighter when one of the Lady Spartan’s sharp-shooters Charlotte Epperson (SO. WG) fouled with 3:25 left to play in the game. The Running Lopes quickly came back and took a 67-66 lead with 25.4 seconds left to play. After a tough inbounds play, the Lady Spartans quickly push the ball up the floor finding Tira Calloway (SO. SG) on the wing, who drove to the basket and draw a blocking foul. Tira stepped to the line and knocks both of the freebies down, giving the Lady Spartan 68-67 lead which would eventually be the final score of a hard fought game between two tough programs.
Tira Calloway led all scorers with 19pts. Charlotte Epperson added 15pts, hitting (5) 3 pointers. Da’Nia McDade (FR. PF) finished with a Double-Double 12pts and a game high 16 rebounds. Lacy Rider (FR. C) added 8 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Spartans started the season off well with a dominating first half, which saw the Lady Spartans build an early ten point lead. Although the Lady Spartans were playing well, you could sense that Otero was starting to build some momentum. Lady Rattlers closed the half with a three point basket that tied the score at 31 apiece. The second half was a struggle for the Lady Spartans because they got their first taste of a loud and rowdy home crowd. Addition to the loud crowd noise second half, the Lady Spartans struggled scoring the ball altogether. Otero built a ten point lead within the first eight minutes of the second half and from that point on it was an uphill battle for the Lady Spartans the remainder of the game. The Lady Spartans competed hard but came up short losing 67-53. The Lady Spartans were paced by Danielle Jackson (SO. PG) and Tamekia Hunt (FR. SG) each finished the game with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Da’Nai McDade (FR. PF) led both teams in rebounding with 10. The Lady Spartans look to bounce back and get to .500 against Lamar Community College on Saturday at 1:00pm.
