Maybell Computer Classes Continue
Over the past year, tax revenue in Moffat County that previously funded the Senior Citizen Scholarship decreased dramatically, resulting in the loss of this benefit. The scholarship, created by CNCC President Dr. John Boyd in 2006, provided no-cost community education and credit-bearing classes for local residents over age 62. In spite of severe budget reductions, Dr. Boyd, an avid support of learning opportunities for senior citizens, has designated funds to continue to offer some classes at no expense for seniors, including the first session of the Maybell Computer Class, held September 9-October.
To attend the second session of Maybell Computers October 21 – December 2, students will pay around $40. The second session, held at the Maybell School (Course #21791), will be instructed by Michael Lausin. Local residents are eligible to receive 75% off of tuition costs which keeps this six week session, (Thursdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m.) affordable. College staff is available to help students complete their registration forms, including the CNCC and Colorado Opportunity Fund application and Moffat County Residency Verification form. Please call 824-1100 for registration assistance.
Yampa Bench/Mantle Ranch Trip – Another Successful Maybell Adventure
On September 16th over 20 travelers joined Mary Morris, CNCC-Craig Campus Community Education Director, and volunteer guide, Larry Hoover, on a journey to Echo Park, Mantle Ranch and along the Yampa Bench Road. A biologist with the National Park Service met the group at Echo Park to talk about wildlife in the area. Mantle Ranch manager, Tom Sewald, presented an overview of the ranch’s history and discussed petroglyphs on the property. The Yampa Bench road is impassable when wet; the Mantle ranch road was destroyed by floods three times this summer. Fortunately, it was a sunny day and roads had been maintained. Special thanks to Larry Hoover, the National Parks Service, Tom Sewald, Mantle Ranch owners, Jim and Fran Carollo; bus driver, Nancy O’Conor and CNCC van driver, Tammy Workman.

Cabin of hermit, Pat Lynch, near Echo Park. Pat was a hermit in the 1870's who visited his neighbors by floating downstream with a log.
October 21 - Maybell Adventure to Mountain Villages North of Steamboat
Maybell Adventurers are going to head east for their next adventure to Clark, Hahn’s Peak and Columbine to learn about the historic area and enjoy the scenery. The bus will leave the Maybell Community Center at 8:00 am and meet up with Craig travelers at the CNCC Campus at 8:30 am. Cost for senior citizens over age 62 is $15. The group plans to eat at one of the eateries in the area; students pay for their own lunches or can bring their own. Students are encouraged to bring water and snacks and to dress in layers.
