What is Academic Advising?
Academic advising at Colorado Northwestern Community College is an on-going, intentional, educational partnership between student and advisor that is intended to promote student success. Academic advising is a relationship between student and advisor to help the student successfully complete a degree and/or transfer to a four year college or university. It is to the student’s advantage to meet with an advisor at least once a semester, as they can assist a student in many ways. Advisors can provide accurate and complete information about degree requirements and ensure students are on track for graduation. They can refer students to an appropriate source for information such as the Counseling and Career Planning office who can help students explore a variety of degree and career opportunities. Academic advisors are knowledgeable about college policies and procedures and can help students learn how to make decisions about their college experience, as well as provide assistance to students experiencing academic difficulties. It is the student’s responsibility to make contact with an advisor and take a lead in developing the relationship by communicating on a regular basis.
