You will be notified by email by March 31 if your submission has been accepted for publication. Please do not contact us; we will contact you.
Copyrights remain with you.
Editors’ Choice Awards of fifty dollars will be made in each of the following four categories: 1) artwork (including photography), 2) poetry, 3) fiction, 4) nonfiction (creative non-fiction, essays, journalism).
Fiction, creative non-fiction, and essays should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages. Poems should not exceed 50 lines. See Submission Guidelines for details.
While we are open to a wide range of subjects and styles, we are not interested in work written exclusively for shock value, gratuitous sex or violence, or anything tastelessly racist or sexist, or cloyingly sentimental.
GUIDELINES FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS:
We prefer that manuscripts and artwork be anonymous so that they can be judged on a qualitative basis. Therefore, for written submissions, please remove your name from the manuscript itself, and from headers that may be on multi-page submissions. The Submission Manager form that you fill out for each piece will contain all the contact information that we need. Of course, artwork that is signed is acceptable; we just want the selection process to be as fair as possible.
GUIDELINES FOR WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS:
Submissions must be uploaded as a Word (.doc or .docx) or rich-text format (.rtf) file. If you are not familiar with the .rtf format, simply do a Google search for "Saving files in rich text format." Mac users, please save your file so the filename includes the ".rtf" file extension. Files that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered.
Prose
--Limit of 10 pages per submission.
--Double space all submissions. Use a 12 point font, Times New Roman preferred.
Poetry
--No more than 5 submissions per person.
--Poems must be 50 lines or fewer and spaced as they would appear on the page.
Note: Waving Hands Review reserves the right to correct typos and obvious spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors in submissions accepted for publication. You will be contacted if we like your submission but feel additional editorial changes are needed. If you are intentionally using unconventional punctuation or spelling in a poem, for example, you should note it in the “Comments” box on the submission form, and/or on a cover page with the submission itself.
GUIDELINES FOR ARTWORK AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMISSIONS:
Waving Hands Review publishes photographs and artwork primarily in black and white; however, we would like to feature a color cover for each issue, so please submit your color photographs and colorful artwork as well. Color submissions not used for the cover may be converted to grayscale or black and white for inclusion in the magazine. Submit digital images only. Use standard image extensions (.GIF or .JPG). Resolution should be 300 dpi or higher. If the file is too large to send (over 4MB), try reducing the dimensions of the image. We publish in a 6” X 9” format, so please consider these dimensions when choosing your submissions.
Note: Waving Hands Review reserves the right to select and edit artwork and photography for space and design reasons without notifying the submitter.
Note: If you need to digitize your photographic prints or artwork, CNCC Rangely has two scanners in the library and one in the “fishbowl.” If you have never scanned an image before, we can offer some technical assistance, time permitting. Contact Leana Cox at 970-675-3334 or leana [dot] cox [at] cncc [dot] edu. CNCC Craig has scanners in the Computer Lab. The Computer Lab also functions as a classroom, so please contact Thomas Chapman at 970-824-1127 or thomas [dot] chapman [at] cncc [dot] edu (thomas [dot] chapman [at] cncc [dot] edu ) for assistance. Availability of the Craig scanners is generally best in the mornings.
How to use the Waving Hands Review Submission Manager:
Please review our submission guidelines before uploading any work. Work that does not follow these guidelines will not be considered.
-
Fill in all of your contact information.
-
Fill in the title of the work you are submitting (abbreviate if long). For multi-piece submissions of poetry, please title your entire submission for reference, e.g., "Three Insomnia Poems." Again, please be concise.
-
Choose the genre of the work you are submitting.
-
Use the browse button to find the single file on your computer that you would like to send. Select the file and click on the open button. Your file should then appear in the "file" field.
-
Please include a brief biography or artist’s statement that could be excerpted in the credits of Waving Hands Review should your submission be selected. Example: My name is Jayne Dough, and I am a second year Dental Hygiene student. I’ve been photographing wildlife for 10 years. This photograph of a bugling bull elk was taken in the Flat Tops Wilderness in November 2007 with my trusty Nikon F. My photograph of a diving nighthawk appeared earlier this year in The Spartan Times.
-
Click submit. After a few moments, a message confirming the success or failure of your submission attempt should appear.
This Submission Manager is a beta version. Please be patient. We will modify the system as we go along.

ABOUT WAVING HANDS
|
In northwestern Colorado near Rangely is the Waving Hands pictograph site (see page 5 of the linked document). Believed to be of Fremont origin, the site is named for a life-size pair of disembodied hands painted on a sheer sandstone rock face. The hands are mysterious. Are they welcoming or a warning? Drowning or emerging? Celebrating a victory or pleading for deliverance? No one knows for sure. But the waving hands are arresting and thought-provoking, and remain a distinctly human statement in a remote wilderness. |
