Criminal Justice Program

Colorado P.O.S.T. Basic Academy - Rangely, CO: 8/25/08 - 12/17/08

This is an approximately 17 week program providing over 800 hours of training in the required Colorado P.O.S.T. Basic Peace Officer Curriculum and additional courses. Students who successfully complete this program become eligible to apply for and obtain Conditional Certification as a Colorado Peace Officer. The Conditional Certification status enables you to apply for employment at city, state, and county levels of law enforcement in the state of Colorado.  Examples of these jobs are municipal police officers, deputy sheriffs, department of wildlife officers, and town marshals.  Classes are held Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and some evenings. Remedial training is scheduled as necessary. This Academy provides you with 36 college credit hours towards the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Law Enforcement.


Instruction

Our instructors are career professionals, actively involved in the specialty areas they teach. The program consists of subjects such as criminal process, human rights and victim’s rights, constitutional law, criminal law, laws of evidence, arrest, search and seizure, Colorado Revised Statutes, defensive tactics and arrest control, patrol procedures, traffic control, investigative procedures, communications, physical training, driving techniques and firearms. A considerable amount of time is spent on practical hands on training utilizing lifelike scenarios for vehicle accident investigation, CPR/First Aid, domestic violence, building search, shoot/don't shoot, and crime scene management. Students will also learn topics such as civil and criminal liability, laws of deadly force, and basic traffic accident investigation among others.
In addition to the Colorado P.O.S.T. required curriculum, our students receive specialized certificates in the following areas;

  • TASER
  • Patrol Rifle (AR-15)
  • DUI/SFST/HGN (N.H.T.S.A.)
  • Radar Operation
  • Incident Command System (ICS 100)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness



Classroom Attire

The Academy operates within a chain of command structure and expects the highest level of integrity, honesty, and accountability from our faculty, instructors, staff and students. Our purpose is to achieve an official presence and uniform appearance within the Academy. All students are required to wear the academy uniform shirt, black BDU pants, and black shoes (shined) while in class. Students will be provided the following items on the first day of class with the exception of the duty belt and gear, which will be ordered at the end of the first day of class:

  • Uniform Shirt (2)
  • PT Shirt (2)
  • PT Short (2)
  • Sweatshirt
  • Sweatpants
  • Handcuffs
  • Duty Belt, Holster, Ammo Pouches & Accessories

The student may purchase additional clothing at a nominal cost from the Bookstore.

 


Living Accommodations

On campus residence halls and dining facilities are available for academy students. There are no provisions for pets or family members on campus and housing is extremely limited in the surrounding area. The dormitory style housing on campus requires a separate housing application (with $100.00 deposit) that will be included in the application packet that you will return to the Academy. Registration

When you mail in the completed application packet, a separate non-refundable tuition deposit of $500.00 is required to hold a seat in the academy and to initiate the background investigation. A thorough background investigation will be conducted once the application materials have been returned to the Academy. When you have successfully passed the initial background investigation you will be conditionally admitted to the Academy. Drug screening and fingerprinting will be done on the first day of class and any negative results may be grounds for dismissal from the Academy.

What You Need To Bring

  • Flashlight
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Pens, pencils, paper
  • Black belt, black leather shoes, black BDU pants, and athletic shoes with non-scuff soles for physical training
  • Copy of High School Diploma, GED, and, or certified college transcripts/diploma (Please submit with your application package if possible)
  • Personal computer/Laptop (DSL available in the dorm w/ Ethernet cable)
  • Telephone (Land line connection available in the dorm room)
  • Personal Items for use in the dormitory including bedding, linens, television, etc.

If you are bringing your own weapon you will need to bring the following equipment;  (ALL Firearms will be stored in the Academy armory on the first day of class)

  • Duty belt (2 ¼) Duty holster (safety style) with covered trigger guard, strong thumb break design, jacket slot styling, snatch-proof safety features
  • 2-pouch magazine holder (3 pouch for .45 cal)
  • 3 magazines for your weapon

Academy weapons may be rented for $50.00. (9mm, .40, or .45 caliber to be determined by the Academy Master Firearms Instructor)
