Colorado P.O.S.T./NPS (SLETP) Basic Academy - Rangely, CO
January 14, 2008 to May 3, 2008 (NPS Students graduate March 14, 2008)
This is a 16 week program providing approximately 800 hours of training that consists of basic law enforcement curriculum. Students who successfully complete this program will become eligible to obtain and apply for state certification at a level I status. Level I status enables you to apply for employment at city, state, and county levels of law enforcement. Examples of these jobs are city police officers, deputy sheriffs, department of wildlife, and town marshals. Classes are held Monday through Saturday.
The cost of the academy POST Basic Police Officer Academy is $7,500, unless you are taking the academy for college credit. Then the cost is $8,000.00, which provides you with 37 college credit hours towards the Associate of Applied Science Degree. (This cost includes background investigation, fingerprint check, housing, food, uniforms, workout clothing, books, supplies and learning materials, equipment, classroom supplies, handout materials, ammunition, additional certifications and the P.O.S.T. examination fees)
National Park Service Academy - Rangely, CO

This is a nine week course of study, that when successfully completed, provides the student with Type II eligibility status for seasonal ranger positions and 450 hours of training. Other job opportunities in this field would be wildlife refuges and state and county recreation areas. Classes are held Monday through Saturday.
NPS Academy Cost is $4,500.00 (This cost includes background investigation, fingerprint check, housing, food, uniforms, workout clothing, books, supplies and learning materials, equipment, classroom supplies, handout materials, ammunition, additional certifications and the NPS Final examination)
Instruction
All instructors are career professionals, actively involved in the specialty areas they teach. The program consists of subjects such as constitutional law, criminal law, laws of evidence, arrest, search and seizure, defensive tactics, physical training, driving techniques and firearms. A considerable amount of time is spent on practical hands on training. Lifelike scenarios are used in training for vehicle accident investigation, domestic violence, building search, shoot/don't shoot, and crime scene management. Students will learn topics such as criminal law, civil and criminal liability, constitutional law, search and seizure, laws of deadly force, and basic traffic accident investigation. Students also receive specialized certificates in the areas of DUI/Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, National Incident Management, OC Spray, Tazer, CPR/First Aid, Patrol Rifle (AR-15), and Hazardous Material training.
CNCC is the only school in the Rocky Mountain region offering the National Park Service SLETP Academy.
Classroom Attire
Our purpose is to achieve a uniform appearance and official presence. If you are being sponsored by a law enforcement agency, and the agency does not object, you may wear your duty uniform. All other students are required to wear the academy uniform shirt, black BDU pants, and black shoes while in class. Students will be given the following:

- Sweatpants
- Duty belt & Gear
- Handcuffs
The student may purchase additional clothing at a nominal cost.
Living Accommodations
On campus residence halls and dining facilities are available for academy participants. Pets are prohibited on campus. Housing is extremely limited in the surrounding area. Dormitory style housing is available on campus and will need to complete and return a housing application to the Academy well in advance of the academy start date. Housing applications will be included in the application packet. If you have specific questions regarding dormitory housing please contact the Housing Director at 1.800.562.1105 ext.220. A $100.00 check must be included for the housing deposit and mailed with the application packet to the Academy.
Registration
When you mail in the completed application packet, a non-refundable tuition deposit of $500.00 is required to hold a seat in the academy. A thorough background investigation will be conducted once the application materials have been returned to the Academy including fingerprinting.

What You Need To Bring
- Flashlight
- Valid Driver's License
- Pens, pencils, paper
- Black belt, black leather shoes, black pants, and athletic shoes with non-scuff soles for physical training
- Copy of High School Diploma, GED, and, or certified college transcripts/diploma (Please submit with your application package if possible)
- Personal computer/Laptop (DSL available in the dorm)
If you are bringing your own weapon you will need to bring the following equipment; (Firearms will be stored in the Academy armory on the first day of class)
- Duty belt (2 ¼) Duty holster (safety style) with covered trigger guard, strong thumb break design, jacket slot styling, snatch-proof safety features
- 2-pouch magazine holder (3 pouch for .45 cal)
- 3 magazines for your weapon
Academy weapons may be rented for $50.00.
