Pre-Dental Hygiene Electives
DEH 175 Introduction to Dental Hygiene (2 semester hours)
An introduction to fundamental concepts and practices related to dentistry and dental hygiene in particular, and as they relate to other healthcare professions.
HPR 180 Pre-Dental Hygiene Internship (.05-6 semester hours)
Provides students with the opportunity to supplement coursework with practical work experience related to their educational program. Students work under the immediate supervision of experienced personnel at the business location and with the direct guidance of the instructor.
Prerequisite Courses
BIO 201 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4 semester hours)
Prerequisite BIO 111 or equivalent, or permission of Dept. chair.
Focuses on an integrated study of the human body including the histology, anatomy, and physiology of each system. Examines molecular, cellular, and tissue levels of organization plus integuments, skeletal, articulations, muscular, nervous, and endocrine systems. Includes a mandatory hands-on laboratory experience covering experimentation, microscopy, observations, and dissection. This is the first semester of a two-semester sequence.
BIO 202 Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4 semester hours)
Prerequisite BIO 2320 or equivalent, or permission of Dept. chair.
Focuses on the integrated study of the human body and the histology, anatomy, and physiology of the following systems and topics: cardiovascular, hematology, lymphatic and immune, urinary, fluid and electrolyte control, digestive, nutrition, respiratory, reproductive, and development. Includes a mandatory hands-on laboratory experience involving experimentation, microscopy, observations, and dissection. This is the second semester of a two-semester sequence.
BIO 204 Microbiology (4 semester hours)
Prerequisite BIO 111 or equivalent, or permission of department chair.
Designed for health science majors. Examines microorganisms with an emphasis on their structure, development, physiology, classification, and identification. The laboratory experience includes culturing, identifying, and controlling microorganisms with an emphasis on their role in infectious disease.
CHE 102 Introduction to Chemistry II (5 semester hours)
Prerequisite CHE 101 or instructor permission.
Focuses on introductory organic and biochemistry (sequel to Introduction to Chemistry I). Includes the study of hybridization of atomic orbitals for carbon, nomenclature of both organic and biochemical compounds, physical and chemical properties of various functional groups of organic chemistry, and physical and chemical properties of biochemical compounds along with their biochemical pathways. Incorporates laboratory experiments.

CHE 109 General, Organic and Biochemistry (4 semester hours)
Focuses on fundamentals of inorganic, organic and biochemistry primarily for students in health science, non-science majors and/or students in the occupational and health related career areas. Includes the study of measurement, atomic theory, chemical bonding, nomenclature, stoichiometry, solutions, acid and base chemistry, gas laws, condensed states of matter and nuclear chemistry, nomenclature of organic compounds, properties of different functional groups, nomenclature of various biological compounds, their properties and biological pathways

CHE 111 General College Chemistry I (5 semester hours)
Focuses on basic chemistry and measurement, matter, chemical formulas, reactions and equations, stoichiometry and thermochemistry. This course covers the development of atomic theory culminating in the use of quantum numbers to determine electron configurations of atoms, and the relationship of electron configuration to chemical bond theory and molecular orbital theory. The course includes gases, liquids, and solids and problem-solving skills are emphasized through laboratory experiments.
ENG 121 English Composition I (3 semester hours)
Emphasizes the planning, writing, and revising of compositions, including the development of critical and logical thinking skills. Includes a minimum of five compositions that stress analytical, evaluative, and persuasive/argumentative writing.
Additional General Education Courses Required for the Dental Hygiene Program
NOT PREREQUISITES, BUT COM 115, PSY 101, SOC 101, and HWE 100, CAN BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ADMISSION IN THE PROGRAM AND WILL BE CONSIDERED IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS
*COM115 Principles of Speech Communication (3 semester hours)
Combines the basic theory of speech communication with public speech performance skills. Emphasis is on speech delivery, preparation, organization, support, and audience analysis.
*PSY 101 General Psychology I (3 semester hours)
Focuses on the scientific study of behavior including motivation, emotion, physiological psychology, stress and coping, research methods, consciousness, sensation, perception, learning and memory.
*SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology I(3 semester hours )
Examines social institutions and organizations from the macro perspective.
* HWE 100 Human Nutrition (3 semester hours) Introduces basic principles of nutrition with emphasis on personal nutrition. Satisfies nutrition requirement of students entering health care professions.
*These courses are required for completion of the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. Additional points are awarded for their completion.

CIS 175 Computer Application for Dental Hygiene (1 semester hour)
Only taken when enrolled in the program.
This course introduces the Dentrix Dental Systems, a clinic and practice management software system. This course serves to introduce to the student how to manage a variety of information including patient demographics, clinical details, and production. Included are descriptions of and hands-on experience with Dentrix Dental Systems, A basic knowledge of keyboard, mouse, and Windows is required to enroll.
CIS 275 Advanced Computer Application for Dental Hygiene (1 semester hour)
Only taken when enrolled in the program.
This course uses advanced knowledge of the Dentrix Dental Systems, a clinic and practice management software system. Included are descriptions of and hands-on experience with different modules of the Dentrix Dental Systems.
PHI 121 Current Issues and Ethics in Dental Hygiene (1 semester hour)
Only taken when enrolled in the program.
Discusses current issues in dental hygiene and heightens student's awareness of ethical issues and choices for action. Includes a library project and an opportunity to facilitate a discussion.
