The Natural Resource Program at Colorado Northwestern encompasses five main areas: Marine science and Oceanography, Fire Science~Wildland, Natural Resource Management and careers, Process Technology, and GIS science. The number of participants is small which leads to a flexible and productive learning environment. Upon program completion students are well-prepared for a wide variety of career paths, which range from managing nearby parks to researching marine ecology for various worldwide agencies. Students pursuing GIS studies here are well-prepared for mid-to entry-level positions in a host of disciplines including business, park management, and energy production. GIS in energy production promises to be a high-growth field over the next few years.
Although it is not a prerequisite for entry into the program, students are encouraged to enter the program proficient in communication and mathematics skills. All programs have an outdoor component as is fitting with natural resources studies. The natural resource department has been and continues to partner with various federal, state, and nonprofit agencies to preserve the ecology of adjacent lands. Further, the GIS program is planning extensive growth so that it can not only serve students but also the community at large.
