The Lady Spartans basketball program won their first conference game in five years this past Saturday, Jan. 13 in Rangely, Colo.
The game against College of Eastern Utah was intense, just like the three other match ups with this team. Each time the Lady Spartans have played this team, they have lost. But each time the two met, the score has gotten closer and closer.
“We only lost by three to them a couple weeks ago,” says sophomore guard Danielle Jackson. “We were ready for this game for awhile now.”
The Lady Spartans came out playing the best they had all season. The pressure from the Spartans surprised the Lady Golden Eagles and caused the early nine-point lead for the Spartans. Freshman forward Nay McDade had a career high 19 rebounds and 14 points, followed by big plays and points by freshman guards Yateria Wilson and Tamekia Hunt.
The Lady Spartans kept the lead all half and came out in the second half making a few turnovers, which the Lady Golden Eagles took advantage of. The game was tied at 70 apiece with 12.1 seconds left on the clock, and the Lady Spartans came down to a last second three-point shot by sophomore shooting guard Charlotte Epperson.
“I knew with the game tied I could take the shot,” says Epperson. “It kissed the glass and fell through the hoop.”

The Lady Spartans won 73-70.
“I was proud of how the ladies competed,” says head coach Antowin Edwards. “We didn’t get down when we got behind.”
The men’s game, however, was the complete opposite. From beginning to end, the Spartans struggled with scoring and rebounding. The bigger and taller CEU team completely took the game into their own hands. At half, CEU was leading 22-42.
“CEU was tough, but we have to bounce back and stay positive and confident with each other,” says freshman shooting guard Jon Henderson.
The Spartans started to make a comeback at the end of the game with long three-point shots by Henderson.
“I couldn’t hit a shot,” states Henderson. “And then I just got hot.” Henderson finished with 15 points.
The Spartans lost 63-103.
The next game for the basketball programs is Tuesday, Feb. 16 in Riverton, Wyo. against Central Wyoming. The Colorado Northwestern program will host Salt Lake Community College and Snow College at home this coming weekend.
