So far, the basketball season for both the men’s and ladies’ Spartan teams is looking good. The men, with a record of 6-7, and the ladies, with a record of 5-8, have already increased their wins from last year, which saw a men’s record of 1-30 a ladies’ record of 3-28.
As the manager of the Lady Spartans, I get to see all the behind the scenes work.
The ladies work hard on a day-to-day basis, and besides playing ball and working hard on and off the court, the team is very family-like.
In Tuesday’s home game against Central Wyoming Community College, both the ladies’ and men’s team took a hard loss, but they kept fighting and playing with heart until the end.
Some days, the players have off days. Sometimes people on the team aren’t quite getting along and, like in all families, there are going to be arguments and disagreements. But whatever the reason is, I know that when these players step on the court, it’s all about the game.
“There are days when my shots don’t go in and it sucks, but I hear my team on the sideline cheering and supporting me, and it helps me to keep my head up,” sophomore guard Yateria Wilson said.
There are quite a few games left to the season, and there is no doubt in my mind that the players will continue to play hard and give all they have to be successful this year.
Compared to last year, too, both men’s and ladies teams have doubled in talent.
“Between us three coaches, we were able to bring in good players who are willing to compete not only on the court but in the classrooms as well,” men’s and women’s assistant coach Kenneth Michaud said.
From what I have seen, where a skill is lacking in one player, there is always a player who can jump in and help the team out.
“The main goal right now for both teams is getting ready for the conference season,” said Michaud.
Personally, I have high hopes for these two teams and I am extremely proud of all they have accomplished. I couldn’t ask for a better second family.
Also, I’d like to congratulate the coaches on all they have done this far and for making sure that each athlete plays to the best of his or her potential. You guys ROCK!
Please come out and support the Spartan basketball teams against Western Wyoming Community College this Saturday at the Hefley Gymnasium. The ladies’ game is at 3 p.m. and the men’s game at 5 p.m.
