Rec Center a community, not just a college, pastime

Finally, the kids will be back out of the house.

The newly remodeled community Recreation Center in Rangely is finished and ready for business. The old Recreation Center was built in 1979 and gave the community a place to have fun and get healthy. With the old building having many problems and needing updates, the community voted and approved a bond issue in July 2008 to fund the remodel. The remodel started in August 2008 and just finished last month.

A Rec Center employee and resident of Rangely, Vikki Webb, says that the kids can finally come back and have a place to play.

“The kids in the community missed the Center so much this past year,” states Webb. “But now it’s back.”

The Recreation Center offers a variety of activities for each age group. These include a full cardio room filled with treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals with their own individual TV screens, a weight room including free weights, racquetball courts, conference rooms, a dance room, outdoor tennis courts and a game room is now available. The Center also includes classes from water aerobics to children’s dance and swim lessons.

The big entertainment for the Recreation Center is its pool center. The bigger pool is a five lane, 7-foot-deep area that can be used for leisure as well as lap lanes. There is also a slide, diving board, hot tub and the always-present toddler pool.

With the excitement of a new place to hang out, the community prices are very inexpensive. For residents, the prices vary depending on ages groups, from youth paying $2 to seniors being free. For non-residents, the price is still unbeatable. The youth price raises only 50 cents and seniors have to pay a dollar. If people are looking for passes to the Recreation Center, there are a variety of single person to family passes.

What’s even better, the Center offers Colorado Northwestern full-time students free access to use the Recreation Center during business hours. The Center also has two conference rooms that people can rent out for only $15 per hour. And the Recreation Center offers child care at a low rate of $1.50 per hour for when you work out. The hours of care are from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Webb also lets us know that the Center has some job openings.

“Anyone who has any experience in yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, or any other activities, please call us and see about a position,” says Webb.

She adds that people in Rangely are very lucky to have this Center with the size of the town. “It’s a good, safe place.”

The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Center is also having a Howl-A-Baloo on Oct. 26 from 10 am to 2 pm. Kids will be able to trick-or-treat, play games, and decorate pumpkins. It is $7 per child, but only 36 children can attend. Parents can sign up at the front desk of the Center.
