It’s a Zombie Kind of World

The final battle of the Humans Vs. Zombies event took place on the Rangely campus last Friday, Dec. 3. Although the humans were successful in the final mission, there were no female survivors. The zombies triumphed. The game, which spanned four days last week and involved several different activities or missions, is basically “a giant game of tag with Nerf guns,”said organizer and network support analyst Ted Shonts. Around 50 students, faculty and staff played the game. Go online to www.spartantimes.org for more photos of the HVZ scavenger hunt. Photo by Ted Shonts

When Colorado Northwestern students think of a Learning Center, they might think of athletes going to get homework done, but that is not the whole case. The Learning Center is open to all students. The CNCC-Rangely campus’ Learning Center is located in Hill Hall. The Center provides students with course help, from teachers and tutors, study halls, and study labs to study groups. › Continue reading

Yampa 2010: A memorable end to a school year

Michelle Snowden
Reporter

On April 15, CNCC’s Outdoor Recreation Program (ORP) began a four-day journey on the Yampa River. This group of 23 included students, faculty, and river guides. Within this group were a range of people who loved the outdoors, those who knew the Yampa River well, and those who had never been camping. So while this was an annual trip for some, it was an entirely new experience for others.

The group began the trip by meeting in the Weiss parking lot as the sun was coming up at 6 a.m., and everyone hit the road closer to 8 a.m. and drove to the put in at Deer Lodge Park in Dinosaur National Monument.

At this point, most people were quiet or conversing only with their clan.

Hangin’ out and hangin’ loose at the Havasupai tribal lands

Correction: The Spartan Times would like to make a correction to the information in this week’s print issue regarding this story. The ORP Spring Break trip featured on page 4 was a series of hikes to the Havasupai tribal lands, located in a remote area adjacent to Grand Canyon National Park. There, the group had an opportunity to see such areas as Havasu Falls and Beaver Falls, not Lake Havasu. Our apologies to ORP, Jim DeLung, and the students who attended the trip.

Garth Butcher poses for a picture close to the border separating Havasupai Tribal Lands and Grand Canyon National Park. In the bottom right, Michael Stoner enjoys the view of Havasu Creek. The creek’s unique blue-green coloring is caused by large amounts of calcium carbonate in the water. Photo by Jim DeLung

On the river again: Students anticipate annual Yampa trip

Michelle Snowden
Reporter

The annual CNCC rafting trip down the Yampa River is an opportunity for students new to the campus to experience the Outdoor Recreation Program (ORP) that the school offers. While students who have already gone on the river trip in past years and plan to go again continue to make memories that last long after they graduate. photo by Michelle Snowden.

On April 15, CNCC begins its annual Yampa river trip. Early on this Thursday morning, students, faculty, and river guides will begin the four-day trip down the Yampa River.
Everyone going on the trip will leave the Weiss parking lot at 6:06 a.m., as the sun is coming up, and make the 45-minute drive to Deerlodge Park boat ramp, found upstream of Dinosaur National Monument on Highway 40.
Here, everyone will choose which raft they would like to be in, which guide they will trust in. Unlike last year, where one could choose to be in either a raft or a ducky (inflatable canoe), everyone will be in a raft this year.
During last year’s trip, the group consisted of those who have years of experience on the river and those who had never been on a raft, let alone camping. › Continue reading

Quelf and the super-ninja monkeys

Jasmine DeFreitas

Gather up your dorm buddies and get ready for a fun filled game night with the new board game Quelf.

Gather up your dorm buddies and get ready for a fun filled game night with the new board game Quelf.

Don’t pick up this game unless you are willing to snort (on command) when you laugh, say “thingy“ when referring to dice, cards, or game pieces, or if you are afraid of mimes or miming anything. “Imaginations” Quelf is a hilarious game full of fun and plenty of laughter.

The lost art of having fun while playing a board game is discovered once again as you play one of eight characters: Lugnut, Mrs. Pickle Feather, Batbileg Chinzori, the Dude, Queen Spatula, The Platypus, the Biscuit Farmer and, of course, our friendly Super Ninja Monkey. The goal of the game is to reach the rocket after going on the multicolored road of purple, green, blue, yellow and red. › Continue reading
