Lady Spartans have rough start at first home conference games in Rangely, Colo.
Bree Gibson ReporterThe first two home games of the regular conference began on Sept. 25 and 26 against Snow College and Salt Lake Community College at Hefley Gym in Rangely. Miscommunication and a substantial height difference led to the Spartans 0-2 conference start.
On Friday, the Lady Spartans played Snow College of Ephraim, Utah. Snow ranked fifth out of six teams in the conference, yet came in and gave the Spartans competitive matches. Snow knocked the ladies out 25-17 in the first set and 25-11 in the second. Wanting to earn a win in the first game of conference season, the ladies fought hard but still fell to Snow in the third and final set, 25-21.
“In the first two sets, we didn’t have the regular communication and skills that we normally do,” says freshman middle blocker Carmelita Begay. “But in the third set, we came back and gave more effort and almost won.”
On Saturday, the ladies had more to accomplish. Playing the top team in conference, Salt Lake Community College, the Lady Spartans had to be on top of their game in order to gain a win. Salt Lake Community College had strong hitters and servers that the Spartans could not match. SLCC beat the Spartans in three easy sets; 25-10, 25-11, 25-8.
