Placement Options

 

Assessment Requirement

Your English and math skills must be assessed before you can take certain classes at CNCC.  There are many different assessments that can be used for placement.  These will help your academic advisor suggest the right classes for your skill level. 

Assessment Options

You must have at least one assessment for each subject area (English and math).  Placement may be different for each subject.  For example, using high school information and SAT scores for math and the guided self-assessment survey for English.

Guided Self-Assessment

  • Documentation Required: None. Your survey results will automatically be sent to CNCC for evaluation and processing.

High School Coursework & GPA

  • High school graduation information can be used if it meets certain criteria:
    • You graduated from high school within the past two years with a 3.0 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and earned a B or higher in 11th grade English and/or
    • You graduated from high school within the past 18 months with a 3.0 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and earned a B or higher in Algebra II, Geometry, or Pre-calculus
  • Documentation Required: Unofficial Transcripts
    • Note: Unofficial transcripts may only be used for placement purposes. Official transcripts may be needed for admissions requirements.

High School Equivalency Diploma

  • GED transcripts showing scores of at least:
    • Reasoning Through Language Arts – 165 and/or
    • Mathematical Reasoning – 165
  • Documentation Required: Unofficial Transcripts
    • Note: Unofficial transcripts may only be used for placement purposes. Official transcripts may be needed for admissions requirements or to transfer credit to CNCC.

Accuplacer Exam Scores

  • The Accuplacer test is an evaluation tool designed to gauge your readiness for college-level courses in math and English.  Test scores are valid for five years.
  • College-ready scores are listed for your reference however the Accuplacer test is not pass/fail and all scores may be used for placement. 
    • Next-Generation Accuplacer – Writing – 246 | Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra & Statistics – 250 for MAT 1240 & 1260 or Advanced Algebra & Functions – 245 for MAT 1340.
  • Documentation Required: Unofficial Score Report
  • If you have not taken the Accuplacer test, you may take it through CNCC by requesting a testing voucher or by locating and contacting an Accuplacer Test Center near you.

ACT, SAT Exam Scores

  • You completed the test within the past 5 years and meet minimum score requirements.
    • SAT: Evidence-based Reading and Writing – 470 and/or Math – 500 - CNCC SAT Code 4665
    • ACT: English – 18 and Reading – 17 and/or Math – 19 - CNCC ACT Code 0525
    • Some math courses require a higher score.  See the Placement Matrix for more details.
  • Documentation Required: Unofficial Score Report

College Credit and Credit for Prior Learning

  • Completed English and/or math coursework with a final grade of C or better.
  • Completed Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), CLEP, and/or DSST exams with passing scores. 
  • Documentation Required: Unofficial Transcripts
    • Note: Unofficial transcripts may only be used for placement purposes. Official transcripts must be provided in order to transfer credit to CNCC.
