Colorado Northwestern uses multiple measures to determine appropriate placement into courses.  One of those methods is a placement test.  ACT, SAT and Accuplacer scores taken within the last 5 years are all accepted.

What is the Accuplacer Test?

The Accuplacer is not an admission exam. There is no pass or fail. Rather, it is an evaluation tool designed to gauge your readiness for college level courses in Mathematics (Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning Algebra and Statistics, and Advanced Algebra and Functions) and English (Writing).

Some students score below college readiness in one or more areas and the test allows your academic adviser to place you into the courses that will help you succeed in college. CNCC has classes designed specifically to help students fill in the gaps in their education so they can succeed in their pursuit of a degree or certification.

Do I need to take the Accuplacer?

If you graduated high school with a 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA and completed a junior level high school English class with a grade of B or higher within two years prior to enrollment at CNCC, you do not need take the Accuplacer for English.

If you graduated high school with a 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA and completed high school Algebra II, Geometry, or Pre-Calculus with a grade of B or higher within 18 months prior to enrollment at CNCC, you do not need take the Accuplacer for math.

If you have the following ACT or SAT scores (taken within the last 5 years) you do not have to take the Accuplacer:

Minimum ACT scores needed:

Subject AreaScore
English 18
Reading 17
Mathematics: Math for Liberal Arts 19
Mathematics: Statistics 19
Mathematics: College Algebra 23
Mathematics: Trigonometry 24
Mathematics: Survey of Calculus 25
Mathematics: Pre-Calculus 25
Mathematics: Calculus I 28

Minimum SAT scores needed:

Subject AreaScore
English (prior to March 2016) 440
Reading (prior to March 2016) 430
Verbal: English & Reading (since March 2016) 470
Mathematics (prior to March 2016) 460
Mathematics (since March 2016) 500

Please see the Admissions section of the Catalog for further details and exemptions.

What if my scores are close but don’t quite meet the minimum listed above?

These minimum scores are based on success trends we see in students entering CNCC. We’ve noticed that even some students who score just a little above the minimum scores struggle with college-level material. The Accuplacer is a great tool to help you succeed in college. We recommend you take it.

Study Guides

It is highly recommended that you brush up on your skills before taking the Accuplacer due to the policy on retesting (see below).  The free resources created by Accuplacer are a great place to start.  You can find them at https://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/student/practice.

Retesting Policy

You may only take the Next Generation Accuplacer tests twice in a semester, after additional studying has been completed.  Retesting is not permitted for the Calculus placement exam.

If you test out of a developmental education course you are currently enrolled in, it allows you to move on to the next class level. However, you will receive the grade that you earned in the course you are currently enrolled in. If you feel that you will not be able to pass a course it may be better to withdraw than receive a failing grade.
